MAY
HEALTH MATTERS
So, how are your allergies these days?
It seems as if this year is particularly bad for those who have allergy
problems. According to the National Center for Health, more than 25
million Americans have allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever.
With all of the sneezingand runny noses this spring, I think that number
may be even higher.
Males and those with a family history of
allergies are more likely to develop hay fever. Other possible risk
factors include being a first-born child, or having been born during the
pollen season.
A runny nose, itchy eyes, sinus
headaches, nasal congestion, and fatigue are common symptoms of seasonal
allergies. This is the way your body’s immune system tries to fight the
foreign substances it senses are present. The symptoms are a result of
the production of histamines in your body. Seasonal allergies can be
life-threatening if temporary inflammation of the airway leads to an
asthma attack.
Is there any way at all to continue to
function in a world filled with pollen when allergies tend to control
your life? Try your best to avoid exposure, by paying attention to the
pollen count index, which the television meteorologist reviews several
times daily during the weather reports. When the pollen count is high,
try to limit outdoor activities. As for specific allergies, tree pollen
is most common in the spring, grass is the summer “sneeze inducer” and
weed pollen is the big culprit in the fall.
There is more pollen in the air on warm,
dry, windy days. The daily peak is usually from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00
a.m. If you have been outdoors, remove your clothing and take a shower
as soon as possible after returning inside. Put on fresh clothes.
NEVER hang your laundry outside to dry. Keep windows closed and run
your air conditioner when necessary. Many air conditioners are now
equipped with an air filtration system, which will help immensely when
you are inside. Be sure to check and clean those filters frequently.
While it seems we
will be waiting awhile for a cure for allergies, the best treatment at
this time is to avoid the onset of symptoms by avoiding the triggers.
For now, we’ll just have to depend on medications, and saline nasal
sprays to get us through the rough times.
A sincere thank-you to all of you who
attended the Ladies’ retreat a few weeks ago. You all seemed to have a
good time, and that definitely makes the day a success. Special thanks
go out to the team who made all of this happen. This could never become
a reality without the dedication and hard work you are always so willing
to provide. Every year is new and different, even though we follow the
same basic plan. God opens new windows of faith and confidence each and
every year. The best part of all is that we can put away our everyday
stresses and just enjoy each other for the day. Hope everyone will be
able to attend again next year………….yes there will be a next year. Just
a little hint, get out your travel brochures, and your
suitcases……………..sounds like there will be some imaginary travelling
involved!!!!
Until
next time,
Betty

SUMMER CROP - hosted by the OSLC Scrappers
If you enjoy scrap booking, card making, or any other craft,
this day is for you. Bring your supplies and your goals to Our
Saviour's fellowship hall and enjoy an entire day of
crafting/scrapping without interruption from kids, spouse or
pets! You'll have a table to yourself to spread out your
project(s). This is a great time to mix work and pleasure as
there's almost always a conversation going! At our last crop we
had 8 people who pumped out a lot of projects and got ideas from
each other. We also had 4 others who came just to check out the
fun! We'd love to add to our numbers!
The best part of our crop is that you can come and go as you
need. Got an appointment or an errand to run? Go ahead and
leave. Your stuff will be waiting for you when you get back and
you can pick up where you stopped. Can't come until
later?....Have to leave early?....It's all good! Thinking you
have a lot of stuff to carry? Drive up to the elevator and
we'll help you carry in and out.
For lunch bring a sack lunch for yourself. We'll also have a
snack table set up so you can bring something to share. .......
Then we can snack all day!!! Oh.....and don't forget about the
door prizes!!!
Call Mary Lou with questions ... 424-2354. Hope to see you

WELCA
would like to thank you for your generosity and support of the
LUTHERAN
WORLD
RELIEF HEALTH KIT PROJECT
these past few months. We were able to put together 39 health
kits and send them, along with the 30 health kits put together
under the sponsorship of the Education Ministry Team, to the LWR
warehouse. Thank you for your response!
And now
during the month of May WELCA has the potential to put together
30 more health kits
with
your help. We have
enough soap, combs, band-aids, and toothbrushes for these
kits…we ask you to help finish these kits by contributing:
-Dark hand
towels
-Dark
washcloths
-Metal
nail files or nail clippers with the file attached.
Contributions may be placed in the marked containers in the
narthex and fellowship hall. WELCA again thanks you for your
help.
These
health kits will help replenish critically low inventories at
Lutheran World Relief as requests for assistance across the
world increases. The kits will help
people
deal with the effects of war, disaster, and poverty.

of the church library and feel free to make a donation. Books,
CD’s, and DVD’s may be placed in the black crate in the
library. If you include your name with the donation, we will be
glad to return any books that we already have copies of. Thank
you for thinking of the library!
Note: If
you have any books checked out that you are finished with or
have had for quite some time, please return as we hope to do an
inventory of the library this summer.

PRAYER SHAWL NEWS
As we
finish our 3rd
year of the prayer shawl ministry, we have begun something new.
We are going to try to provide “prayer quilts” for children and
young teens who are sick or are in need of comfort. These will
be knitted or crocheted but won’t have fringe. They will also
be available for parents and their newborns as a means to
snuggle up together and feel God’s love. We will make every
effort to let you know which ones are which with an attached
note. We ask for prayers that this new part of our ministry
will also be a blessing.
