Nurse Betty says...

You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. You may have even been worried on that first day of school, with all the new things around you:  new teachers, new kids, and for many of you, a new school.  But by now you know there was really nothing to worry about.  Your teachers are great, and you have made tons of new friends.  The cafeteria food is even better than before. You know your way around the school, and feel quite at home.

But, wait, you say.  What if you HATED school the first whole month? What if you are still trying to figure out the classroom rules, if or when it’s o.k. to talk, if you have to follow certain rules if you need to visit the restroom?  What if you get lost every time you try to find your locker?  What if the food just isn’t as good as the great meals mom makes?  What if you are just too shy to say “hello” to someone you haven’t met yet?

Well, you need to give yourself some time to work things out.  Once you get used to the new routine, know your way around the building, and recognize more people you’ll probably feel better.  First of all, talk with your teachers.  They ARE THERE TO HELP YOU.  It’s good to get along with your teacher, because it makes the time you spend in the classroom nicer.  But the very most important reason for getting along with your teacher is that when you do, you will learn more.  It is easier for you to ask questions and to get extra help when you need it.  Your teacher can also be helpful with other problems, such as finding your way around, or dealing with bullying.

But what does getting along with your teacher mean, anyway?  It means that you and your teacher can talk in a way that works for both of you, so that you can understand what the teacher is trying to teach you, and that she knows you are trying your best to learn.  He or she wants you to be polite and respectful, and to pay attention.  You want a teacher who is respectful to you, answers your questions, and tries to help you learn.

In every school you will hear kids say a certain teacher is mean or tough, but don’t believe any of those stories until you are in his or her class and can make up your own mind.  A teacher who is called tough may just feel strongly about making sure you are learning what you are supposed to. The teacher is doing what he or she is supposed to do—teach !  Give every teacher a chance, just like they give you a chance to learn everyday you are in their classroom.

Oh, and about the cafeteria food…….you will get used to it, someday!!

GO GET CLEAN IN THE MUD???

Suppose you have just come in the house after playing outside all day.  You have been riding your bike through big mud puddles, and globs of mud cover you from head to toe.  “That’s it,” says Mom, “you need to take a bath before supper.  I’ve already filled the bathtub for you.  Now get up there and get into the water.”  You know right away that Mom means business, and you speed into the bathroom.  But, whoa, you put on the brakes when you glance into the bathtub.  The water is so dirty, it looks like a hundred pigs have already taken a bath there!!!  Is Mom playing some kind of joke on you???

Now you know that Mom wouldn’t expect you to take a bath in dirty water.  That’s just silly.  But did you know that God asked a man to do something like that?  He had a very good reason for doing it, too, and………well let me tell you about it.  Some of you may remember this story from Avalanche Ranch Bible School.

Naaman was a very important man.  He was the leader of a whole great big army.  He won many battles and was liked very much by the king of his country.  He was a hero.  But…Naaman was very sick.  He had a disease called leprosy.  Leprosy made big sore spots all over Naaman’s body.  No one knew how to make him well again.  How sad for his country!!!   How sad for his family!!

One day, on of his servant girls, spoke to Naaman’s wife.  “I am so sad for my master.  I wish he would go to Samaria.  I have heard about a prophet there who follows God’s word.  He will ask for God’s help to make Naaman well again.  When Naaman’s wife told him about what the servant had said, Naaman went to the king.  The king also said, “Yes, Naaman you must go to this prophet.  I will write a letter for you to take with you, and will also send along some gifts.”

So Naaman went to Israel to find this prophet.  He visited the king of Israel and gave him the letter and gifts from his own king.  Elisha, the prophet heard that Naaman was in the country.  He sent a message to Naaman telling him to come to him.  When Naaman arrived at Elisha’s home, Elisha didn’t even come out to greet Naaman, but sent out a message for him.  It said, “Go to the Jordan River and take seven baths.  When you are done your leprosy will be cured.  Naaman was very unhappy with this message.  The Jordan River was very dirty,  like that dirty bath water we were talking about earlier.  Surely God didn’t want Naaman to go near that dirty river.  How could Elisha even ask him to do such a thing?  Maybe Elisha didn’t hear God’s message right.  Well, Naaman’s servants finally convinced him to get into the dirty water.

So Naaman went to the River Jordan as Elisha had said. He washed seven times, as Elisha had said.  And can you guess what happened?  His skin was clean as a whistle.  NO SPOTS!!  Naaman was cured.  HE WAS CURED!!

Sometimes it seems like we are asked to do things that seem silly or even too hard for us to do.  But we have to trust that God knows what is best for us.  When we pray and ask God to help us to the right thing, HE WILL answer our prayers.

Do you know what happens on Wednesdays at Our Saviour’s?
It’s really quite an exciting day, and if you haven’t been there, you really should check it out.
Right after school the kids in kindergarten, first grade and second grade meet for snacks, fun and games and lessons from the Bible. Once a month they even let Nurse Betty come to visit. She talks about staying healthy, and usually has a fun activity to share.
At 5:00, it’s time for the YYG, or younger youth group to show up. They are a little older, third, fourth and fifth graders. They eat supper together, play games and spend time together, all the while learning about God and his plan for them. But most of all THEY HAVE FUN! Nurse Betty visits them, too and this year promises to be more fun than ever,
as she will have some real neat surprises for you.
So, it’s time to make plans to spend part of your Wednesday at Our Saviour’s, starting September 19.
Come see what you’ve been missing.
Just have mom call the office 423-3363, and talk to Kathy about signing up. There is even transportation available. Don’t miss out.

Have you ever heard someone say “That’s nothing to sneeze at”?  This saying, which has been around since the early 1800’s, may come from the idea that someone might turn up his nose at something he thinks is not important.  When you say something is “nothing to sneeze at”, what you are really saying is that it is something important.  For example, coming in second place in a race or at an invention convention is nothing to sneeze at.  Even though you didn’t come in first, second place is still an important accomplishment.

 WHAT HAPPENS TO SWALLOWED GUM?

Almost everyone has swallowed gum before, but few kids have ever needed a doctor because of it.  You might have heard that swallowed gum stays in your stomach for 7 years.  That’s NOT true.  Though your stomach can’t digest a piece of gum the same way that it works on other food, your body can move it along through your intestines and out of your body.  The gum’s journey ends when you make a trip to the bathroom.

IF you swallowed a HUGE amount of gum all at one time, you could cause problems for your body.  It may not be able to move that big chunk all the way through your stomach and intestines.  It may cause what is called a blockage.  Then you would have to visit the Doctor or even the hospital.  But accidentally swallowing gum once in awhile is harmless.

A good rule to follow is when you are done with your gum, throw it in the wastebasket, don’t swallow it!!!
